WELCOME TO THE CITY OF CANTON INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT’S ELECTRONIC TAX RETURN FILING SYSTEM
YOU MUST HAVE AN ACTIVE ACCOUNT TO FILE ELECTRONICALLY.
This 2018 online return is intended for employee income only. Business taxpayers reporting Schedule C or Schedule E income or losses will need to file hard copy returns.
Each and every return filed with our department for 2018 will be reviewed by an income tax auditor to ensure an accurate and appropriate reporting/payment of the tax.
PLEASE NOTE: Canton’s income tax rate increased from 2.0% to 2.5%, effective July 1, 2018.
To complete this online return accurately, you will need your paystub(s) from your last paycheck received before July 1, 2018.
If you worked the full year, from January 1, through December 31, you should enter your income and withholding information for the first half of the year: START DATE 2018-01-01 and END DATE 2018-06-30; and then the second half of the year: START DATE 2018-07-01 and END DATE 2018-12-31.
Use your (last pay in) June paystub to identify income and withholding for the first half of the year.
Then subtract the June income and withholding amounts from the totals reported in boxes 18 and 19 on your form W-2.
And please be sure to upload scanned images of both when you transmit the return.
If you enter the dates accurately from whichever date you began work in 2018 with that employer through June 30th, and from July 1, 2018 through whichever date you ended work in 2018 with that employer, the online return will calculate and report your income and tax obligations accurately.
But, if you worked for a Canton employer inside the city limits of Canton, you may not owe any balance shown as due on Line 4.
Please be sure to contact our office to discuss and confirm it with an auditor before remitting a payment.
Also, if you worked for a Canton employer but do not have your (last pay in) June paystub, be advised that splitting your income and imposing the 2.0% tax on the first half and the 2.5% tax on the second half probably will result in a questionable “Balance Due,” or “Refund Due” on Line 4 or Line 5. In these cases the online return will adjust your balance or refund to $0.00.
If in the audit process, the adjustment is found to be in error, we will contact you.
The City reserves the right to audit, pursuant to the provisions of Section 182.133 of the Income Tax Code, to ensure a reasonable and equitable report of income and tax.
